Coursing in Tuam

‘We are glad to find that last week a very enjoyable day’s coursing was held under the auspices of the Tuam popular club in the neighbourhood of the town.  This was on Sunday week, and the runs were witnessed with keen interest.  In all there were nine courses and two kills.  One of the matches led to a particularly exciting contest, in which both the hare and the two hounds were absolutely beaten up.  We may mention that a notable incident in connection with this event was the humane and sportsmanlike action of a little boy named Egan, of Tuam, who helped the hare over the ditch, whilst some other bystanders stopped the hounds. ‘

The Dark Colleen

Never before in the history of amateur theatricals in Ballinasloe, has the great privilege, which brings with it signal honour, been extended to a local dramatic class, as that given by Mr Victor O’D Power, in entrusting to the Ballinasloe Dramatic Class for production for the first time in the Town Hall on March 6th, what he considers on of his best plays, “The Dark Colleen” And to this, too, is the additional honor that he will be in Ballinasloe on the night of the performance, as well as some days previously.

Realising this great distinction, the class (a most carefully selected caste), has entered whole heartedly into its work, and with but a weeks’s preparation the different characters have complete knowledge of their various roles, so the remaining five weeks will be devoted to having each member a perfect portrayal of the character he represents.

We have read the play, and it embraces a splendid bunch of characters, so employed that on is given a fine contrast in temperament. The play holds one from the very start. You have mystery and humour, to follow in the piece. with all that is noble and despicable in human nature, as compiling the plot in this most interesting play.
