Jeremiah Mee and the Listowel Police Mutiny, 1920
The actions of the Black and Tans in Ireland in the summer of 1920 changed the course of the Irish Independence Struggle and destroyed the reputation of British policing in Ireland. This detailed talk looks at the life of Jeremiah Mee from Glenamaddy, County Galway, who led a small detachment of regular RIC in North Kerry in June 1920 that refused to hand their barracks over to the crown forces in protest at the atrocities of the British administration. This lecture examines the context of the protest and the national and personal consequences for those involved.
