Tuam, Tuesday

The text of the unconditional-surrender of Irish Sinn Fein Volunteers in Dublin has been received in Tuam. It is signed by P H. Pearse, Commandant ,( ans calls upon all parties of the Volunteers in the outlying districts to immediately surrender. The Volunteers who held possession of Moyode Castle, Athenry, have dispersed and gone back to their homes. A tea traveller from Tuam named Davitt was arrested and detained at Moyode for 24 hours, and then liberated. He estimated the strength of the Sinn Feiners at Moyode at about 300.

The following communique was issued by the Field Marshal in Chief Commanding the Home Forces at 1 p.m. on _Monday — ‘ The General Officer Commanding in Chief reports that all the Dublin Commanders have surrendered.”

An earlier communique stated

–” The situation in Dublin is much more satisfactory.  Throughout the country there is still much to be done, which would take time but the back of the rebellion had been ‘broken.  Last night messengers were sent out from the leaders of the rebels in Dublin to rebel bodies in Galway, Clare, Wexford, Louth and Dublin counties ordering surrender.  The clergy and R.I.C are doing their utmost to disseminate this information.”

Further officer casualties announced are — killed 1 captain and 4 lieutenants; wounded 21 officers, including Lieut Colonel Pane and Major Hanson, both of the Sherwood Foresters. One officer is reported missing.

Galway and Athenry

 With reference to the announcement of tho unconditional surrender of the Irish Volunteers in Dublin given in my despatch of Monday, and the local effect of the news in County Galway, I am now abel (sic) to supplement it by noting that the Irish Volunteers in Moyode Castle have disbanded and that Capt Wm. Mellows, who had been in command there, has succeeded in escaping. It will be remembered that recently Mr ” Mellows, with others, deported, but it appears he succeeded in returning to the country prior to the rising disguised as a clergyman. The police, it is stated, would have rushed the castle but that the military commanders  would not permit it. It is reported that 19 of the Craughwell Sinn Fein Volunteers have surrendered. Craughwell is held by the National Volunteers , -who are greatly in the majority and are loyal to the authorities. At Mo} ode Castle the Sinn Feiners left after them a number of pikes, bandoliers, police caps, and police boxes, the latter take from huts which had been raided. A horse and trap belonging to Mr O’Brien, tea merchant, Tuam, which had also been captured, has, been restored to him by thie authorities. A motor car, the property of Mr. Meldon, of Colarne, Athenry, was also seized, but the owner and a friend who was with him were allowed to depart. The deaths of three Volunteers who took part in the affray at Carranmore, in which Constable Whelan, of Galway City force, was killed, are announced, their names being Thomas Ruane, Grealish, and Carr.
