The Voice of the Rising – The County of Galway 1916 Memorial, Renville Park, Oranmore

This monument was officially unveiled on 30 May 2017. It incorporates five words from the 1916 Proclamation, namely: ‘Equality’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Happiness’, ‘Prosperity’, and ‘Nationhood’. The Proclamation, which declared the Irish republic, was read aloud by Patrick Pearse outside the General Post Office in Dublin at the beginning of the Easter Rising on 24 April 1916.

County Galway’s Rising started the following day, when the Irish Volunteers attacked the police barracks in Clarinbridge and Oranmore. That evening, the rebels retreated to the model farm at Barrygarraun West, on the outskirts of Athenry.

On Wednesday, there was a shootout at Carnmore Crossroads and areas around Galway town were shelled by the HMS Laburnum. The rebels retreated to Moyode Castle, where they camped for two nights. Due to a lack of arms, many departed. A smaller group of rebels finally disbanded at Limepark House in the early hours of Saturday, 29 April 1916.
