Galway County Libraries

Book Collections 1916: The Library Service will increase the number of Irish Language books across its collections in 2016. A bibliography of Irish Language fiction and non-fiction books in Galway County Libraries relating to all aspects of 1916 will be compiled and distributed to Branch Libraries. Irish Language Publications relating to 1916 will be available throughout Galway Libraries in 2016.

Community Support Scheme:for Irish Language Initiatives/ Activities of schools: community and voluntary organisations promoting or increasing the use of the Irish Language throughout the County of Galway and in the context of the 1916 commemorations.

Supporting increased service provision through Irish: Efforts to increase the awareness of the role of the Irish language within the local authority will continue in 2016 and Irish language classes will be provided for elected members and staff during the year.

1916 Poetry Commemoration: A series of events and poetry workshops in the Gaeltacht areas organised by Muintearas, based on the theme of the events of the 1916 Rising. The events will be publicised in the local media when the dates and times are arranged.

Lecture Series about Irish in Libraries: A series of talks and lectures on the Irish language and surrounding issues will be held in libraries throughout the County to include local historical topics.

Irish Resource Packs – Irish Language Flagship Project: Galway County Council will develop Irish language resource packs to provide guidance, practical tips and knowledge to schools, community groups and sporting clubs in how to promote and enhance the use of Irish in their organisations and in how to prepare Irish language activity plans.

Irish Language and Social Evenings: A series of Irish language culture, music, poetry and prose nights will be held in locations throughout the county in celebration of the living language and culture.

Supporting the promotion of the Irish language: Irish language groups who are developing the language in their areas will be supported in the form of sponsorship of Galway County Council Award in the national Glór na nGael award scheme 2016.

Féile Scannán na Réabhlóide 2016/ Revolution Film Festival 2016: Club Scannán Sailearna is organizing a film festival in Connemara to celebrate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Irish films about the Rising and the War of Independence as well as recognised international films about the theme of revolution over three days (20-22 May) in 2016 in Amharclann na Seanscoile, Indreabhán, Co. Galway. There will be lectures and discussion sessions with experts and recognised film makers about how 1916 and revolutions in general are portrayed through the medium of film. Among the films to be shown are Mise Éire (1959), Áille an Uafáis / A Terrible Beauty (2013), October – Ten Days That Shook the World (1928) and The Battle of Algiers (1966). Among the speakers who are confirmed to appear are history and film experts Mary Harris, Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh and Seán Crossan as well as film makers like Bob Quinn.

Scoil Samhraidh an Phiarsaigh to be held annually will 2016 explore issues surrounding Pearse’s vision for the Irish language and nourishing the language to include An Ghaeltacht, Irish Language, Language Rights, Culture, Education etc.

Cathaoirleach’s Award for Irish: Recognition will be given to the efforts groups, within and outside of the Gaeltacht, have made to celebrate, promote or increase the extracurricular use of heritage or the Irish language in their school or area in the context of the commemoration of 1916.

BEO Gaeltacht Schools Film Project – Mo Thír, Mo Theanga, Mo Thodhchaí: Schools film project where Gaeltacht national school children film, edit and produce their views of their country, their language, their future in the context of the commemoration of 1916.
