A Sensational Arrest in Tuam

Newspaper Clipping from The Western People newspaper 13 May 1916.  While the paper states that Langley was arrested on May 8th, Galway prison records show he was actually arrested May 7th.

Willie (later Liam) Langley was O/C Tuam Battalion, Galway Brigade, VP Na Fianna Éireann (1915/16) & Head Centre IRB North Galway.  He mobilized with Volunteers from his battalion Easter Ties.  Following arrests they disbanded, Langley made his way to Athenry early Easter Wednesday where he joined up with the rest of the Galway Brigade.  He was involved in Moyode and Limepark.

He was imprisoned in England; Wakefield, Frongoch and Reading.  He was released under general amnesty 24 December 1916.

‘SINN FEIN RISING – SENSATIONAL ARREST IN TUAM
On Monday morning, at 4.20am. Mr. Wm. Langley, cashier at Maher’s drapery establishment, Tuam, was arrested at his residence by D.I. Comerford, Acting-Sergeant McIntyre, Constable Gibbons and Constable Slattery. He was conveyed under an escort to Galway Jail. Mr. Langley was vice-President of the Fianna Eireann Association of Ireland, of which the Countess Markiewicz was President. Some arms, ammunition and Sinn Fein publications were found in the accused’s rooms.’
