The Truce of 11 July 1921: An Natural end to the War of Independence or sowing the seeds of Civil War?
This detailed lecture examines the context to the Truce that ended the War of Independence in July 1921 and the differing approaches to the cessation of hostilities by republicans, civil society and the British administration. As Dr McNamara points out, while the end of the fighting was greeted with relief and joy across Ireland, for many republicans, the truce represented a military blunder at best, and for others, a betrayal of the ideals of the 1916 Rebellion.
