Opening event of the Commemorative Strand of the 1916/2016 Centenary Programme for the County of Galway with a ceremony at Áras an Chontae.

Athenry

The County of Galway will participate in synchronised wreath-laying ceremonies to be held at 1.15pm – the time that the first shots of the 1916 Rising were fired. The County of Galway wreath laying ceremony will be held in Athenry, in recognition of the historical significance of the town and the surrounding areas in relation to the events of 1916.

Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway

A ceremony at Áras an Chontae which includes the reading of the Proclamation, a minute’s silence, sounding of the Last Post, raising of the National Flag, Reveille and National Anthem.

Carnmore, Co. Galway and Bohermore Cemetery, Galway City

The unveiling of a commemorative stone at Carnmore, the site of the engagement between the Castlegar and Claregalway Volunteers and the RIC. This resulted in the death of Constable Patrick Whelan, the only fatality of the Rising in County Galway. The unveiling of the commemorative stone will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Constable Patrick Whelan in Bohermore Cemetery. The wreath-laying and unveiling of the commemorative stone will be jointly led by the Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway and the Mayor of the City of Galway.

Rosmuc, Co. Galway

The official opening will take place of the new cultural centre at Teach an Phiarsaigh, Ros Muc, providing an experiential introduction to the Irish language and the local Gaeltacht culture and environment, and focusing on PH Pearse and his relationship with Ros Muc.


May 21st, 2016 at 7pm

Ballinasloe Library, Society Street, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway

A reception for the relatives of those who took part in the events of 1916 in the County of Galway to commence with an Interfaith Service involving participation and representation by the main faith organisations and a programme of music and poetry with an historical element will be hosted by the Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway and the Members of Galway County Council.

Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill

An event, hosted by the Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway and the Members of Galway County Council, will take place to mark the conclusion of the 1916/2016 Centenary Programme for the County of Galway.
