Artist in Schools Scheme: This scheme is open to all primary schools in the County of Galway. The aim of this scheme is to offer children the opportunity to work with a professional artist on a once-off project in visual arts, dance, literature, drama, music, photography, film etc. with a particular focus on Ireland 2016 Commemorations.

Writer in Schools Scheme: The Writer in Schools Scheme is one of the longest running arts-in-education programmes in the country and is run by Poetry Ireland and funded by the Arts Council. The scheme part-funds visits by writers and storytellers to primary and post primary schools and will focus on and remember the events of 1916 in a number of schools in the County of Galway in 2016.

Maloney’s Dream/Brionglóid Maloney: When one man’s dream of a new beginning collided with the birth of a nation: Branar’s new bi-lingual show for audiences aged 8 and upwards which is set against the backdrop of the historic events of April 1916. The show explores the impact of the revolution on the lives of ordinary people. In advance of the performances, Branar will launch a website which will serve as a resource for teachers and students to explore 1916 in the classroom www.maloneysdream.ie

Bealtaine Festival 2016: The month of May belongs to the Bealtaine festival, when thousands of older people showcase their talents and creativity. The Galway County and City Council’s working together will co- ordinate the Bealtaine Festival for the City and County in 2016. Groups will be invited to hold an activity or event during May including historical walks and talks, art exhibitions, painting, sketching and clay workshops, music sessions and concerts, theatre and film showings, including events and activities relevant to the themes of our centenary programme.

Éamonn Ceannt, The Galway Sessions: In association with the Galway Sessions and the leading uilleann and bagpipers from Ireland, Scotland and the USA, Galway County Council and Galway City Council will commemorate the life and work of Éamonn Ceannt, native of Ballymoe, Co. Galway, 1916 Proclamation signatory, Easter Rising leader, piper and the founder member of Na Píobairí Uilleann.

Heritage Week 2016: Heritage Week is a weeklong celebration of the natural, cultural and built heritage of Ireland during which many local and national heritage organisations hold special events throughout the country. These events cover a wide range of interests, with everything from outdoor activities and lectures to music recitals and historical re-enactments. Galway County Council, Heritage Office will be holding a number of 2016 events in partnership with local communities throughout the county during that week, including events relating to the themes centenary programme.


September 2016

Culture Night 2016: Culture Night takes place on the third Friday in September from about 2pm to late into the night! In 2016, Galway County Council will apply available funding from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to co- ordinate Culture Night for the County of Galway and will facilitate artists, groups and organisations holding events on Culture Night, including events with connections to the themes of our centenary programme.
