Defying Terror
Jeremiah Mee, Glenamaddy and the Listowel Mutiny, 1920
posted by Hilary Kiely
This book, Defying Terror: Jeremiah Mee, Glenamaddy and the Listowel Mutiny by Dr Conor McNamara, was produced to mark the centenary of the Listowel Mutiny, led by Galway native Jeremiah Mee and his comrades in Listowel RIC barracks, who resigned from the police rather than hand their barracks over to the Crown forces in June 1920.
The Listowel RIC Mutiny was an important event in the history of the Irish Independence struggle because it exposed the brutal nature of the British campaign in Ireland. The mutiny resulted in a bitter debate in the House of Commons over British policy in Ireland and exposed the terror being covered up at the highest levels of the British administration.
