Frank Cunnane was one of six Anti-treaty soldiers executed on the morning of 11 April, 1923 by Free State forces, in part in retaliation for a deadly attack on the Free State Army Barracks in Headford, The letter he wrote to his mother on the eve of his execution inspired this song, Dutiful Son.
